Fort Worth Convention Center–Yeehaw!

Howdy y’all! The new location of the 2016 Dallas-Fort Worth Writers Conference is the Fort Worth Convention Center, and just like everything else in Texas, it’s big.

Yes, those are cowboy hats

Offering more than 250,000 square feet of exhibit space, 60,000 square feet of meeting space and 28,000 square-foot ballroom the FWCC takes up 14 city blocks in the south part of the down town district of Fort Worth and is surrounded by numerous restaurants, bars, hang outs, and the world famous Water Gardens that have to be seen to be believed.

Of course we don’t want you to get lost in a building this large, so we’ve had them partition a big chunk just for us on the second level. We’ll have more information on this coming soon.

The Convention Center sits smack dab in the middle of what (in the 1800s) used to be known as Hell’s Half Acre. A place of gunfights, saloons, gambling and other nefarious activities.

Hell’s Half Acre

It was something right out of an old west movie until in 1917 when the military decided they wanted to set up Camp Bowie in the city but didn’t want the debauchery to tempt the troops of the Thirty-Sixth Infantry. They went in and cleaned house, straightening out the Acre and bringing civility back to the area.

Now the entire downtown district of Fort Worth is one of the cleanest, safest, cultured districts in the nation. It was revamped and reimaged in the late 90’s around the Sundance Square area and now is an upscale place for friends and family to have a Friday or Saturday afternoon/evening excursion.

And let’s not forget the Fort Worth Convention Center is directly across the street from the Omni Fort Worth Hotel. If you’ve never been there, it’s a stunning building.
